Congratulations to Drexel's 2023 DAAD RISE Recipient, Nhat Nguyen!
March 20, 2023
We're pleased to announce that Nhat Nguyen has been selected as a 2023 DAAD Research Internships in Science & Engineering (RISE) recipient! Through RISE, he will spend the summer in Germany conducting research on the formulation of nanoparticles for drug delivery.
Before leaving for Germany, Nhat will spend the Spring Term working in a research co-op position with Dr. Hao Cheng in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel. This co-op is supported by the Research Fellowship Supplement Program, co-funded by Undergraduate Research & Enrichment Programs and the Steinbright Career Development Center.
Congratulations, Nhat!

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Hao Cheng
Nhat is a third year international student from Vietnam pursuing a Bachelor of Science in materials science and engineering at Drexel University. His interest is in nanoparticles fabrication and characterization. He chose to major in materials science and engineering because he was particularly interested in how nanotechnology can be applied and incorporated into medicine and pharmaceuticals. He thought it was amazing how nanoengineering can solve problems in non-traditional ways such as the COVID-19 vaccine, which is a type of lipid nanoparticle that was created entirely differently from a traditional vaccine. Outside of school, Nhat has many hobbies and interests, including outdoor activities, especially rock climbing and bouldering. He also likes volunteering because he wants to learn more about different communities who have different struggles and stories. Helping out other people gives him a sense of meaning and motivates him to become a better person.
Nhat has been involved with the Pennoni Honors College as a STAR Scholar and a UREP Ambassador.
DAAD RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from North America, Great Britain, and Ireland in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering. RISE offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer.
The Research Fellowship Supplement Program (RFSP) is a partnership between Undergraduate Research & Enrichment Programs and the Steinbright Career Development Center to support students pursuing summer research fellowship opportunities while fulfilling co-op requirements. Read more about RFSP in our 2022 news announcement.
